    Description

A special gift from one sports immortal to another!

1970's Muhammad Ali Training Worn Gloves Inscribed and Signed to Julius "Dr. J" Erving.

UPDATE: It has been determined that the gloves date to the 1980's, not the 1970's as noted in the original description. A letter of provenance from Julius Erving is included.

Two of the most dynamic athletes of the 1970's are linked in a remarkable way by the offered lot, a token of admiration from the three-time Heavyweight Champion to the man whose giant dunks (and giant afro) heralded a thrilling new age in professional basketball. At a time when the country was slowly emerging from the shadow of Jim Crow, each athlete was embraced and celebrated by the African-American population as not only the greatest in his respective sport, but as a truly "authentic" ambassador for the race. And so the next generation of superstars grew up idolizing this pair, from Sugar Ray Leonard to Magic Johnson, in much the same way the emergence of Jackie Robinson inspired millions of young black ballplayers.

From an era when America's sports pages were populated by the Rumble, the Thrilla and the ABA Slam Dunk Contest comes this pair of "Cleto Reyes" gloves worn for bag work and sparring by boxing's greatest figure. Each shows solid wear that preceded the presentation to Erving. The right-handed glove is inscribed, simply, "To Dr. J." The left completes the sentiment: "You are the greatest, Muhammad Ali."

The leather of the gloves has stiffened over the passage of decades, and the interior padding has turned crunchy, but the aesthetics are entirely unaffected by this natural occurrence, and Ali's black marker rates a legitimate 10/10. The historical equivalent of a pair of Joe Louis gloves inscribed to Babe Ruth, this is an offering that is likely to grown in intrigue and value as that special era in American sports retreats ever more deeply into history. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
