1965 Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) vs. Sonny Liston On-Site Boston Garden Poster Signed by Liston! After the brash Louisville underdog shocked Sonny Liston with his masterful performance on Miami Beach, the boxing world clamored for a rematch, putting this iconic pair on a collision course at Boston Garden. But as the fight approached, concerns that the promoters were connected to organized crime began to grow, ultimately leading to Suffolk County District Attorney Garrett Byrne filing an injunction to block the event. A quick scramble to locate a new venue ensued, and a junior hockey rink in the small Maine town of Lewiston was approved, setting the stage for a bout that would prove to be one of the most controversial in a sport with a long and colorful history of shady dealings.

Simply as an on-site poster for the original venue of Ali vs. Liston II, this gorgeous relic would find no shortage of suitors in the advanced boxing collectible marketplace. But this remarkable piece amplifies the appeal dramatically with the appearance of an autograph from the victim of "The Phantom Punch," one of the toughest autographs of any major American athlete active after the Second World War.

Sonny Liston's rarity in autograph format is a function primarily of his borderline illiteracy, followed by his sudden and unexpected passing over four decades ago. Certainly we have never encountered another autographed poster from The Big Bear, nor do we expect to ever see one. This Liston signature is likewise the largest on record, taking advantage of the poster's outsized dimensions (22x28") to stretch out to a full seven inches (7") in length. It is applied in 7.5/10 black ink.

The poster itself, printed on midweight card stock, exhibits only a small degree of edge and corner wear, confined entirely to the white border area. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
