Description
1963 Rocky Marciano Signed Oversized Photograph. It's hard enough finding nice Rocky Marciano autographed pieces, but finding something this nice, rare, and with great provenance is a needle in a haystack. The boxing great died in 1969, long before the autograph show circuit and memorabilia agents were around. While 8x10" photos might not be ultra rare, an original early 1960's 16x20" signed photo is something special.As far as provenance goes, the two drills holes in the frame tell part of the story, as this was personalized to a famous restaurateur and hung in his establishment for years. Angelo Lygizos was a Greek immigrant who became a war hero for the United States in World War II, earning both a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He went on to open multiple restaurants in the San Jose, California area, host a cable TV cooking show and write a popular cookbook. The signature and inscription on this photograph read:
"To Angelo, Always a pleasure to be with you and the boys, Keep punching. (Your)Pal, Rocky Marciano, 12-11-63. 'My Favorite Place'."
Signature is in bold black sharpie rating a nice 10/10. Some creasing and crazing on the photograph itself but nothing that detracts. While one could certainly re-frame this with a nice matte, it would be a shame to take it out of the "cheap" frame it resided in at Angelo's place for over five decades. Framed to about 17.5x21.5."
