Description

1960 Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) Heavily Notated & Signed Boxing Glove. The young Champion owned skill and confidence in equal measures, his open-throated bravado establishing the young Louisville Lip as one of the most controversial figures in American sport even before his conversion to Islam and rejection of the Vietnam War draft fanned those flames into an inferno. We find the eighteen-year-old Clay at the cusp of international fame at the time he laid pen to leather to create what is arguably the most impressive and desirable Clay/Ali autographed piece ever offered. On a Draper & Maynard left-handed glove, he writes:

I am the 1959 National A.A.U. Champion (LIGHT) (HEAVYWEIGHT).
I am the 1960 National A.A.U. Champion (LIGHT) (HEAVY W.)
I am the 1959 National Golden Gloves Champion (LIGHT HEAVY W.)
I am the 1960 National Golden Gloves Champion (HEAVYWEIGHT.)
I am the 1960 United States Olympic Champion (LIGHT HEAVY W.).
Your Friend,
Cassius Marcellus Clay
'Rome Bound'

Clay's fear of flying nearly cost him his destiny of Gold at the Rome Olympics, but he was ultimately convinced to stand up to his fear, and he made the Atlantic crossing on his knees in prayer with a parachute strapped to his back. Condition of both the glove and the extraordinary inscription are simply unimprovable. LOA from Craig Hamilton/JO Sports Inc.
