1955 Rocky Marciano Gloves Worn in Training for Don Cockell Bout. After the ocean of violence that Marciano poured upon his British opponent in the May 16, 1955 bout at San Francisco's Kezar Stadium, one English journalist wrote, "this was the kind of extra courage which makes you proud to belong to the human race and to have been sired by the same breed as the boy who grew up in the back streets of Battersea." But brave victimization was all the iron-jawed Cockell could muster, and the lopsided victory for the American would carry Marciano to forty-eight and zero, with just one professional bout ahead.

These sixteen-ounce "Benlee" brand gloves exhibit solid wear from the lead-up to that massacre, each notated in white block lettering, "Rocky Marciano Personal Gloves Used in Training for his bout with Don Cockell 1955." Expert Craig Hamilton suggests that the writing is consistent with those emerging from the famous Ring Magazine collection. Letter of provenance from Craig Hamilton.
