1951 Joe Louis & Marshall Miles Tax Issues Ephemera. An American hero during World War II, fighting the Nazi-backed Max Schmeling twice, Joe Louis had a few public troubles with the IRS a few years afterwards. Louis was under investigation by the IRS for unpaid taxes that eventually forced Louis out of retirement to pay off more than $500,000 to the government. One of these fights was a match against Rocky Marciano, who was reluctant to fight the American hero. The older, out of shape Louis was beaten badly in this bout, and he retired after this.

This lot includes several documents and checks related to Louis and manager Marshall Miles to the IRS from 1951. Eight documents/checks are included, as well as a letter to Louis from Jimmy Cannon regarding coming out of retirement, and a souvenir 8x10" photograph of Louis and family. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
