1943-46 Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey & Queensberry Original Art Signed by Hundreds. The details of the events that spawned this intriguing trio of extensively autographed original charcoal portraits have been lost beneath the sands of time, but an intrepid researcher could likely solve the mystery with some time and effort. Clearly the theme here is boxing, as the subjects of the skillfully rendered portraits are Heavyweight Champions Jack Dempsey and Joe Louis, and a gentleman who signs simply "Queensberry," almost assuredly a descendant of the clan after whom the modern rules of gloved boxing were named. Dempsey and Louis each sign their own images as well, in circle drawn for that purpose. Hundreds of further autographs adorn each 22x30" rectangle of artist's board, occasionally providing a recognizable name like Barney Ross, Tony Canzoneri, Nat Fleischer, Emmitt, Kelley, James Montgomery Flagg and Robert Ripley (of "Believe it or Not" fame). Each derives from a gala event at the famous New York City hotel the Waldorf Astoria, a "C.S.S.C.A." event held in either 1943 or 1946. General handling wear and some toning, but each presents very well. Are there hidden jewels in the chaos of signatures? Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
