    Description

1936 Louis vs. Schmeling Film Reel Movie Poster. While most white Americans had changed their tunes by the time of the famous rematch in 1938, seeing Schmeling as a symbol of the Nazi oppression that was gradually sweeping across Europe, it's a sad fact that racism caused most to side with the foreigner in the pair's first meeting in 1936. Louis, previously undefeated, was thought to be invincible, and his twelfth-round knockout at the underdog hands of the German truly shocked the boxing world and delighted those who struggled with the notion of a black Champion. Here we offer a rare and beautiful poster once displayed at a cinema playing the film reel of the bout for those who had been unable to attend live at Yankee Stadium. Rendered in the bold art deco style of the day, the text reads, "Official Motion Pictures Boxing Exhibition, Max Schmeling vs. Joe Louis, Round by Round, Punch by Punch, See the Sensational Knockout! Every Seat a Ringside Seat." The verbiage leaves little doubt as to which was considered the hero and which the villain in this drama. Poster is screen printed rather primitively onto a 22x22" light cardboard sheet and displays beautifully despite horizontal creasing near the bottom (essentially invisible upon display) and light foxing. Finding another one is likely impossible, and finding a better one surely is.
