Description
1930's Joe Louis Fight Worn Robe. Though Louis would become the most dominant professional in the history of the Heavyweight ranks, his success in the amateur prize ring remained a point of pride for him, particularly during his early rise to global prominence. Leading boxing collectibles expert Craig Hamilton's detailed letter of examination reveals that he located footage of Louis wearing a nearly identical robe into the ring for his second bout against Lee Ramage in 1935, two years before he'd claim the title from "Cinderella Man" James Braddock."It is certainly conceivable that Louis had more than one of these robes which he wore into the ring during his early pro fights," Hamilton writes, "but lack of film on those fights makes it almost impossible to positively confirm. This robe is the correct size for Joe Louis at the early part of his career and the robe has been marked J. Louis."
That black ink identifier appears at interior sash of the patriotic red, white and blue satin garment. A flag shield patch is affixed over the heart, and red and white chenille lettering on verso announces, "American Gold Glove Champion," a title Louis had claimed in April 1934 at the US Amateur National AAU Tournament in St. Louis.
The calf-length robe exhibits some soiling and a small hole near the bottom hem, but it still presents very well, as our catalog imagery should convey. We believe this to be the earliest Louis garment ever to surface on the hobby's auction block. LOA from Craig Hamilton.
