Description

1930's Jack Dempsey Exhibition Fight Worn & Signed Gloves. Though the Manassa Mauler announced his retirement from the fight game in March of 1928, just six months after his loss to Gene Tunney in the famed "Long Count" fight, it is well documented that he continued to tour the country and participate in exhibition bouts, the boxing equivalent to baseball's "barnstorming" days. Presented here is a pair of gloves believed to have been used at one of those exhibitions, dating from the 1930's or 1940's and manufactured by noted glove maker "Sol Levinson," whose manufacturer's patch appears at each wrist. The fourteen-ounce gloves remain in terrific condition, with only slight cracking of the leather at the wrists, not materially affecting display value. Each glove bears a large black ink signature on the back of the hand, and while these do not contrast particularly well against the red hide, they technically rate 8/10 in quality. Each glove offers a second signature on the white lining of the interior wrist, with these presenting much better in 8/10 blue ink. With the few professional fight worn Dempsey gloves ever made available to the hobby commanding astronomical prices, this is a special opportunity for a collecting mortal to bring the Golden Age's greatest boxing figure into his collection.
