Description

1923 Jack Dempsey vs. Tom Gibbons Full Tickets Lot of 5. One of the greatest disasters in the history of fight promotion is recalled with this historic lot of full tickets, grim reminders of a fight that essentially bankrupted the small town of Shelby, Montana. Their existence in unused state exhibits the very problem that spurred the financial tragedy--rumors that the fight would not take place kept the vast majority of spectators from boarding trains to Shelby, and the fight saw only 7,000 tickets in the massive new arena sold and 13,000 spectators crashing the gates for free. Local banks that had fronted the money for the huge purses for the fighters went under, and the great Golden Age pugilist and eventual victor Jack Dempsey barely escaped the town with his life. All five are for the expensive fifty dollar Ringside seats. EX-MT.
