    Description

1921 Dempsey vs. Carpentier Lantern Slides Lot of 21. It was one of the most historic boxing matches in the long history of the sport, a meeting between the Heavyweight Champ and a decorated French WWI pilot billed by the promoter Tex Rickard as the "Battle of the Century." Over 80,000 fans packed the hastily built arena in Jersey City--the first million dollar gate--and more than 300,000 listened on the radio as broadcasters relayed the details of Dempsey's fourth-round knockout. In the weeks to follow, fight fans would experience the match in photographic images at local cinemas, where this collection of lantern slides once was utilized. We believe these slides represent the complete collection, and all notable scenes including the knockout are present. The 3x4" slides remain in fine condition with the exception of one which is broken in half but still complete and thus reparable to a limited degree. It is a pre- or post-fight image of Dempsey in street clothes.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
