    Description

1920's Harry Greb Signed Photograph to Leading Pittsburgh Boxing Promoter. He fought nearly 300 bouts in his thirteen-year career, squaring off forty-five times in 1919 alone, with a high-volume attacking style that earned him the nickname "The Pittsburgh Windmill." Virtually every accounting of the top pound-for-pound fighters in history--from Ring Magazine to Boxrec to Bert Sugar--finds Greb firmly ranked in the top ten, with the International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) picking him second behind only Sugar Ray Robinson. The American Light Heavyweight Champion from 1922-23 and World Middleweight Champion from 1923-26, Greb became the only man in history to defeat Gene Tunney in a bout that earned Ring Magazine's "Fight of the Year" honors for 1922. He would face sixteen future Hall of Famers in forty-eight total bouts, going 33-9-6 against them.

But in the boxing autograph collecting hobby, Greb's rarity and desirability elevates him to even more rarefied air. Just two months after the final bout of his career, an August 19, 1926 loss to Tiger Flowers at Madison Square Garden, Greb entered an Atlantic City clinic for surgery to repair sinuses badly damaged by a long and brutal career and failed to awaken from the anaesthetic. On October 22, 1926, Harry Greb was dead at the age of thirty-two.

Presented is the very first Harry Greb autograph that Heritage has ever had the good fortune to offer, and one of the very finest specimens from the microscopic surviving supply. The magnificent sepia-toned 8x10" photograph is inscribed in the boldest black fountain pen ink, "To My Friend Joe Mazer From Harry Greb."

Mazer is famous as the lead promoter for Pittsburgh's top boxing venue of the 1920's, Motor Square Garden, where Greb fought thirteen times between 1920 and 1925. This photograph was discovered at a small estate auction in the suburbs of the city that Greb and Mazer called home. The image and matting exhibit typical foxing, and a light wrinkle passes through Greb's knees but remains clear of his inscription. But certainly any such minor condition concerns must be forgiven in light of the tremendous rarity and importance of this treasure of the prize ring. Framed dimensions 12.5x15". Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
