    Description

1912 John (Jack) Johnson Signed Receipt. His distinctive script will look very familiar to those collectors with a concentration in fisticuffs, but the autograph variation most certainly will not. In fact, this is the first time we've ever encountered it here at Heritage--a flawlessly rendered black fountain pen signature that reads "John A. Johnson." The official nature of the document would be the reason for the more formal manner of signing, and the May 15, 1912 receipt likely relates to either the Mann Act case or the equally trumped-up smuggling charge concerning a $6,000 pearl necklace purchased for Johnson's wife and seized at customs. The text reads, "Received of James H. Wilkerson, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Secretary's check No. 2784, issued May 10, 1912, on the Assistant Treasurer of the United States, Chicago, for $1,140.00, payable to the order of John Arthur Johnson, being the amount heretofore deposited by him." The document appears to have been hand-trimmed to its current 5x8" dimensions, with a single horizontal fold well clear of the signature and light, even toning, but no distractions of note. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
