Description

1910 Jack Johnson vs. James Jeffries Hand Sewn Silk. Following Jack Johnson's assumption of the Heavyweight Championship in 1908, the former titleholder Jeffries was wooed out of five years of retirement to reclaim what white America believed was rightfully theirs. On Independence Day, 1910, the overwhelmingly white crowd at Reno, Nevada saw their worst fears realized, as Johnson battered the overmatched Jeffries for fourteen rounds before his corner saved him from an inevitable fifteenth round knockout by throwing in the towel. Presented is a rare hand sewn silk from this most culturally relevant boxing match of the twentieth century, exhibiting typical wear but none of the tearing typical of century old silk collectibles. A marvelous keepsake with wonderful period craftsmanship that recall a very different time in our nation's cultural and athletic history. Also pictured is the referee Tex Richard, who was also the most famous promoter of his time.
