1910 Jack Johnson vs. James J. Jeffries Photographs by Dana Lot of 69. The Johnson-Jeffries fight of July 4, 1910 in Reno, Nevada is considered one of the most socially significant prize fights in the history of boxing. Jim Jeffries was coaxed out of retirement by his supporters for the purpose of winning back the heavyweight title from the black fighter who held it, Jack Johnson. There was bitter resentment for Johnson, who was not only a great fighter and the first black man to win the heavyweight title, but also a man who defiantly refused to comply with the standards set for black Americans in the early 1900's. It was against a bitter racial background when the two fought that day in Reno.

Jeffries had been a great champion, but hadn't fought in five years and had to shed more than seventy pounds before entering the ring. From the start of the fight the outcome was apparent. Jeffries was just a shell of his former self and Johnson totally dominated the fight, which climaxed with a fifteenth round knockout. This historic fight was captured in photographs by noted boxing photographer Percy Dana.

Presented here are sixty-nine individual black and white original photographs from the fight including scenes around the ring as well as the ring action. Each photograph is in great condition and shows a different scene and each measures approximately 4x6". Here's a wonderful opportunity to purchase a piece of boxing history, preserved on photographs, from one of its most celebrated events. LOA from Craig Hamilton/ JO Sports.
