Description

1892 Sullivan vs. Corbett Olympic Club Member Tickets Lot of 8. While our boxing experts can attest to having seen similar Olympic Club member tickets for other bouts at this New Orleans sports venue, never had they encountered examples for this most historic of 19th century boxing matches, stating that these are quite probably the only eight known to exist. We had considered the prospect of selling the tickets individually, but decided instead to present the full group of eight with our complete assurance that this is the entire known population. Rest assured that this lot represents one of the most exciting recent finds in the field of boxiana, acquired from a consignor whose family had received them from a former Olympic Club employee. They make their first, and quite possibly their last, appearance upon the auction block here. With full tickets from this historic bout that saw the invincible John L. Sullivan finally felled by the superior boxing skills of James Corbett typically realizing $2,000 at auction, it should go without saying that these far more scarce relics should inspire spirited bidding. Each ticket is constructed of heavy card stock with the member's name handwritten at center, framed by the words "Olympic Club, Sullivan - Corbett." Age toning and edge wear is to be expected, but there is no creasing or tearing, leaving all solid and complete. A remarkable offering for the most serious boxing collector. Guide Value or Estimate: $20,000 - up.
