Description

1892 John L. Sullivan vs. James Corbett PSA "Authentic" Tickets Lot of 8 - John Seaward Collection. On September 7, 1892 at the Olympic Club in New Orleans, World Heavyweight Champion John L. Sullivan attempted his final title defense against "Gentleman" Jim Corbett. It was the first Heavyweight Championship to be fought with gloves, thus closing the door on the bare-knuckle era. The youthful Corbett was a skillful boxer and entered the ring in top condition. Sullivan, on the other hand, hadn't fought in three years and drank profusely. Corbett danced and dodged the bull rushes of the older Sullivan and eventually wore down the slower, out of shape champ en route to a twenty-first round knockout.

Eight tickets to the most important bout of the nineteenth century are offered here, five for general spectator admission (three have punch cancellation holes) and three for a member of the press. All exhibit typical handling wear and age-toning, and are slabbed "Authentic" by the experts at PSA. A terrific lot that originates from the family of the Olympic Club's steward John T. Seaward.
