Description
1860 Heenan vs. Sayers Porcelain Shaving Mug. It's been called the fight that changed boxing forever, a bloody two and a half hour brawl a century and a half ago to determine whether the American John Heenan or the Brit Tom Sayers was the true Heavyweight Champion of the World. The illegal bout in a remote Hampshire field was reached by vast crowds which had swamped London platforms in the early morning, their three-guinea tickets stamped "To Nowhere." In attendance were the nineteen year old Price of Wales, Charles Dickens, WM Thackeray and the prime minister, Lord Palmerston, who all beat a hasty retreat when Aldershot police stormed the ring to bring the contest to an end at what would be declared a draw. While quite a bit of memorabilia was produced to commemorate this historic fight, little has survived, and this is the first example we've encountered of this beautiful double-handled shaving mug. It stands four inches in height and measures seven inches in diameter, inclusive of the handles. Identical fight imagery appears on both sides. Fantastic, undamaged condition.Auction Info
