Description

Circa 1960 Archie Moore Fight Worn, Signed Boxing Trunks. The only fighter who knew what it was like to step into a ring with both Rocky Marciano and Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali), Archie Moore's incredible career began in 1935, when he was twenty-one-years-old, and ended almost thirty years later in 1963, when he was nearly fifty! The longest reigning World Light Heavyweight Champion ever, "The Mongoose" fought over 200 bouts and is considered one of the greatest punchers and pound-for-pound pugilists of all-time.

The black silk trunks with thick, white silk waist band (4-4.5"), black zig-zag stitching, and thick, pointed leg trim on offer here are consistent with the type of trunks which Archie Moore used during his career. The trunks do not contain any tagging and the waistband has stretched over time due to its loss of elasticity. The design, and even the weak waistband, appears to be a perfect match to fight photography from Moore's knockout victories over Yvon Durelle (1959) and Pete Rademacher (1961).

The letter of provenance states that the trunks were originally sold (along with a pair of gloves and a robe) by Archie Moore to Marty Jacobs of the Sands Hotel Boxing Museum and signed some time later in NRMT black sharpie. A copy of this letter will be offered with these trunks as the original is included with the robe, also included in this auction as lot # 81837. The incredibly oversized "Archie Moore" autograph sits front and center on the white silk waistband. Copy of letter of provenance from Bob Case. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autograph). Auction LOA from SGC Authentic (autograph).
