    Description

Early 1970's Muhammad Ali Training Worn Trunks & Gloves.
"I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.'" It's a common pugilistic aphorism that fights are won and lost in the gym, but it's also often said that rules are made to be broken, and there's no question that Ali was occasionally an offender. Not this time though, as the two included slides from the personal collection of noted photojournalist Isaac Sutton reveal the lean, muscular physique of a legend in his prime.

After the photo shoot, Sutton became the beneficiary of the gloves and trunks Ali is wearing in the images, and they are presented here, along with the slides themselves. We aren't certain of the exact date of the images or the gear--Sutton passed away in 1995--but our best guess is that they date to the early years of the famed fighter's reinstatement.

The trunks are the classic Ali style--white satin with black trim, with the special "Made Expressly for Muhammad Ali" applied to the bottom of the "Everlast" label. The four-ounce gloves are likewise "Everlast" brand. All articles exhibit solid training wear, with a bit of inconsequential staining appearing on of trunks. Letter of provenance from collector who purchased gear from Isaac Sutton. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
