    Description

Circa 1930's Abe Attell Signed Photograph. Abe Attell, Featherweight Champion of the World from 1901-1912, was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1955. After he retired, Attell, who had the habit of playing cards the night before a fight, was part of the entourage around gambler Arnold Rothstein. As Rothstein's representative, it was Attell who gave $10,000 each to eight Chicago White Sox ballplayers, including Shoeless Joe Jackson, to throw the 1919 World Series. When the scandal broke in 1920, Attell went to Canada for a year to avoid being subpoenaed. He was never brought to trial. When called to testify before the grand jury on October 1, 1920, Rothstein denied all involvement with the scandal. He shifted the blame to former associate Abe Attell. On October 27, 1920, Rothstein was exonerated. In a trial that lasted from July 18th to August 2, 1921, the eight players and five gamblers indicted were found not guilty. The next day, newly appointed Baseball Commissioner Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis announced that he would banish the eight players from baseball for life, despite the acquittal. The 8x10" photograph picturing the former Champ is inscribed "To a Real Fellow, John Klossman, From the Little Champ, Abe Attell. Surface shows some unobtrusive creasing that is only visible upon closer inspection. Overall, fine condition. Beautifully matted and framed to final dimension of 14x23". LOA from Craig Hamilton / JO Sports. Additional LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/ PSA DNA.
