Circa 1860 John Morrissey Signed Cut Signature. One of the most fascinating figures of the brutal bare-knuckle days of Championship prizefighting, John Morrissey earned pugilistic immortality and a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame through determination and a granite chin as opposed to mastery of the sweet science. Morrissey's official fight record lists just three bouts in the 1850's, though his unsanctioned contests and street fights were said to number in the hundreds. Victories over Yankee Sullivan in 1853 and John Heenan in 1858 earned Morrissey the "Heavyweight Championship of America." An 1854 loss to Bill Poole was avenged by Morrissey's gang, which murdered Poole in the streets two weeks after the bout. Presented is one of the only known examples of Morrissey's autograph, rendered with gorgeous 19th century penmanship and retaining its original 10/10 black fountain pen ink boldness. The paper that serves as its medium offers both the size and stock of a typical business card, and mild toning of the stock causes no concern. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
