    Description

1979 Muhammad Ali Exhibition Used, Signed Boxing Gloves - Gifted to Aspiring Fighter. Duane Daniels was an aspiring fighter who dreamed of reaching the big time. At age 17, Daniels was a featherweight (125 pounds) for the Brotherhood Boxing Club in Sioux City, Iowa. Despite being relatively new to the fight scene, Daniels worked his way up the ladder in a considerably short amount of time. He won district, state and regional competitions to advance to the National Golden Gloves Championships in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1979. One of 800 participants, Daniels found himself against Bernard Taylor in the opening round. Taylor compiled a 481-8 record as an amateur and appeared in two Pan American Games. Daniels barely lost a decision to the eventual prize fighter.

During the Golden Gloves event, a special speaker was brought in to entertain the guests. Muhammad Ali conducted an exhibition with Tony Tubbs. The Champ danced around the ring and threw a couple of jabs at Tubbs, a member of his Muhammad Ali Boxing Club, during the sparring session. When finished, Ali summoned Daniels from the crowd and gifted these black-and-white Tuff Wear gloves he had used in the exhibition. They have remained with Daniels since. Daniels did get them signed during one of Ali's autograph signings in the early 1990's. The inside of the gloves feature "AAU 10 Oz." labels. Ali's signatures rate 10/10 and are set against the white portion of the leather. Letter of provenance from Duane Daniels. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (autographs). LOA from Heritage Auctions.
