1962 Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) Signed Photograph to Cassius M. Clay - Signed to Family Member of Slave Abolitionist. Rarely are we able to link history together like we are with this listing. Cassius Marcellus Clay was a key figure in the abolition of slavery in the south. The politician was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives and later the United States minister to Russia under President Abraham Lincoln. His political views nearly cost him his life on a number of occasions. The pioneer had to carry two pistols with him as a way to thwart off would-be attackers in the south. Herman Heaton Clay named his son after Cassius Marcellus Clay. That Cassius M. Clay would later become Muhammad Ali.

Presented for bidder consideration is an 8x10" signed by Cassius Clay two years before he was able to add the words "heavyweight champion" to his resume. It was signed to a direct descendant of Cassius Marcellus Clay's who kept it for years. "Best of Luck to Cassius M. Clay from Cassius Clay 1962" is signed in blue ballpoint to the upper right corner. The Lin Caufield photo was subsequently applied to a hard cardboard backing as a protective measure. The signature was executed against a light spot and rates 8/10 in strength. While Ali signed many items during his title run, and a plethora of material later in life, this listing features one of his earlier signatures. Add the fact that it was signed to a family member of the man whom he was named after, and the historic value is heightened. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
