    Description

1946 Mike Jacobs Signed Checks Lot of 25. A protege of iconic boxing promoter Tex Rickard, Jacobs took the reins of the New York City boxing world upon Rickard's 1929 death, but his big break would come in 1935 when he met the management team of then up-and-coming African American heavyweight contender Joe Louis. Here we present twenty-five signed checks from this Branch Rickey of boxing, the man best remembered for his promotion of Louis during a time when informal barriers blocking black boxers from title shots still stood. The posthumous Boxing Hall of Fame inductee's black fountain pen signature appears upon twenty-five checks issued by his promotion company, Twentieth Century Sporting Club, Inc. While most of the payees will be known only to serious boxing historians, we do note a secretarially endorsed check made payable to Ray Robinson. Checks should mild handling wear but all present very well with no troubling flaws. Also here are a couple dozen company checks signed by Jacobs' secretary Sol Strauss. The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
