1912 "Battling Mike" Donovan Handwritten Signed Letter. After participating in Sherman's March through Georgia during the Civil War, Donovan turned to the fight game, meeting both John L. Sullivan and Jack "The Nonpareil" Dempsey during his active career. Later he would work Kilrain's corner for the Sullivan fight, and prepare Corbett for his historic defeat of Sullivan in 1892. The International Boxing Hall of Famer passed away in 1918, making documents like this 1912 ALS on "New York Athletic Club" letterhead, written during Donovan's reign as boxing instructor for the prestigious institution, enormously scarce. Donovan makes a reference to the white boxing world's search for a Caucasian to unseat Jack Johnson from the Heavyweight title, noting "We have a white hope. Come in and see him perform." All ink and Donovan's closing signature survive with 9+/10 boldness, and the three-page letter (written on three quadrants of a single sheet) exhibits original mailing folds and light handling wear but no significant faults. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.

I am completely satisfied, more to the point, absolutely ecstatic, about not only the proceeds but the wonderful professional manner every aspect of my little consignment was handled.
