1888 Jake Kilrain Handwritten Letter with Incredible John L. Sullivan Content. Extraordinary letter penned by the Hall of Fame boxer to his cornerman Johnny Murphy introduces the uninitiated to the world of 19th century trash-talking, as Kilrain takes his most famous opponent to task. "[John L.] Sullivan is crazzy (sic) he had to fight [Hall of Famer Charley] Mitchell but did not want to the paper men who brought him over here made him fight and he is worth nothing as a card until he does fight as the people think he is a bluff." The rant continues in Kilrain's rambling, punctuation-free style, "he is with the worst gang in England and I think he is afraid to fight fair and has the gang to break [it] up." The letter is written on both sides of a 7x9" page folded in a greeting card format, then folded horizontally for mailing. Kilrain signs with a simple "Jake" in the same 9+/10 black fountain pen ink that composes the letter. Wear is centralized at the fold lines but causes little concern, leaving the letter to present wonderfully. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
