    Description

1940 Sugar Ray Robinson Golden Gloves Jacket. Dubbed in 1997 by Ring Magazine as "pound for pound, the best boxer of all time," Robinson was at the beginning of his remarkable career when he wore this jacket at the New York Golden Gloves Championship in 1940. Born Walker Smith, Jr., the teenaged fighter assumed the name of his good friend Ray Robinson after borrowing his Amateur Athletic Union boxing card to gain entry to the local gym. After winning the Golden Gloves Championship, Sugar Ray immediately turned pro, and the rest is boxing history. The royal blue sweater jacket from Robinson's last amateur bout has golden felt "Golden Gloves" stitched across the back and a matching "NY" in Yankees font over the heart. Zippers are located at the v-neck of the collar and at the cuffs to allow boxing gloves. A tear that extends downward from the point of the collar has been stitched back into place, and various rips and holes dot the surface. Despite its admittedly imperfect condition however, the jacket still displays exceedingly well and does not suffer significantly for its flaws. Its status as the earliest piece available from Robinson's boxing career must outweigh these concerns anyhow. Letter of authenticity is from Sugar Ray's son, Ray Robinson II. LOA from Craig Hamilton/ JO Sports.
