1920-1921 Willie Farrell Ring Welterweight Championship Belt. Willie Farrell was a very prominent boxer from 1910 to 1929 when he emigrated to Argentina. Farrell was known as a boxer-actor and simultaneously with his boxing career had a career as a singer in London music halls. In all Willie Farrell fought 116 contests (89 won 24 lost 3 draws). "The Ring", as it is commonly known, was perhaps London's best known venue for boxing between 1910 and 1939. Every London boxer of note fought at the Ring at some time or another, as did most of England's top provincial fighters. During 1920 the promoters (Bella Burge and Ted Pritchard) decided to hold a series of competitions for top class men at all weights. Each of these competitions would be fought for a decorated belt, and between 20 and 30 boxers took part in each competition. Willie Farrell was the winner of the welterweight competition and was awarded the belt being offered for sale. The belt itself is white metal and the "stones" are enamel surfaced. The interior of the belt is lined in leather to which the metalwork is attached. The leather is in quite good condition. The belt is quite striking, sized 5 1/2 inches in height (made up of three panels) 39 inches in length, the center medallion is 8 1/2 inches in width. Engraved on the scroll work to each side of the center medallion is Willie Farrell. The belt was part of the Nat Fleischer collection and was exhibited at The Ring Museum.
