1880's Professor Mike Donovan Original News Photograph. A member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Professor Mike Donovan's life was a series of amazing events. He fought in the Civil War, marching with General Sherman through Georgia. He fought John L. Sullivan and was in a bare-knuckle bout refereed by Wyatt Earp. He invented the punching bag. He trained James Corbett for the Sullivan fight and was a corner man in the last bare-knuckle championship fight. He won a fight for the right to becoming boxing instructor at the New York Athletic Club where he was a pioneer of combination punching and evasive footwork. He was friend of US President Teddy Roosevelt and taught him and his sons how to box. His son, Arthur Donovan, is also a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, having officiated twenty Joe Louis bouts, including both Schmeling matches.
His grandson, Art Donovan Jr., is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
