    Description

1860's John Heenan Mezzotint. The 19th century boxing equivalent of a trading card, this masterful portrait of the American Champ is underscored by text recounting the details of his birth and his greatest accomplishments in the ring:

"He fought John Morrissey for 5000 dollars and the Championship of America on October 19, 1858 at Long Point, Canada West, Tom Sayers on April 17, 1860 at Farnborough, and Tom King on December 10, 1865."

The 9.5x15" artwork is vintage backed for protection, with some vintage news clippings affixed to that backing. The obverse exhibits just some scattered toning to suggest its age, but it still presents very well. Certainly the finest portrait study we've encountered of this early bare-knuckle Champ.
