    Description

Rare 1899 Police Gazette Jim Jeffries SGC 60 EX 5. James Jeffries is known for being a strong and durable fighter and a natural lefty. During his career, he broke the ribs of three opponents, and these were all title fights against other titans of the era. Jeffries is best known for his return to boxing on July 4, 1910 to fight Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson, a fight which became cause to celebrate the racism of the time. Offered is a very scarce Police Gazette Cabinet photo of very young Jeffries in the pose he is now known for. The image has an 1899 copyright date and shows barely any signs of handling or age. The card mount has all metallic gold copy intact confirming the "Police Gazette Gallery" and his inclusion in the "Noted Sporting Celebrities" series. Graded SGC 60 EX 5. A rare early Jeffries piece with a high quality photo.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
