Massive 1880's - 1930's Police Gazette Boxing Premiums (450+). The National Police Gazette debuted in 1845 and is simply called "Police Gazette." This tabloid was a combination of "National Inquirer," Sports Illustrated and the TV show "Cops." Content covered events that would be of importance to the police like violent crimes, western outlaws and sports. Extremely well designed, it became popular for the quality engravings that featured athletes, burlesque dancers, strippers and even prostitutes. It certainly was the "men's magazine" of its era. It's glory years was the late 19th century and early 20th century but the last issue hit newsstands in 1977. Boxing was a huge contribution to content with full-page supplements and articles. This is an amazing gallery of over 400 of those large paper-thin premiums, some single covers and a few complete/partial issues! This is just a short list of some of the names you'll find: Attell (2), Barbour/Jeffries , Beecher, Bernstein, Brannigan, Britt (3), Britton, Broderick, Burke, Burns (6), Callahan (3), Carpentier, Carter, Chaney, Choynski, Coffey, Cole, Corbett (4), Corbett/J. L. Sullivan (2), Coulon, Daly (4), Dempsey (3), Deshler, Dixon, Donohue (2), Donovan (3), Driscoll, Erne (2), Fitzsimmons, Gans (2), Gibbons (2), Gotch, Griffo, Heenan/Sayers, Hyland, Jackson, Jeannette, Jeffries (6), Jeffries/Sharkey, Johnson, Johnson/Corbett, A. Kauffman, Kelly (3), Ketchell (3), Kilrain (2), Kilrain/Sullivan, Langford (2), Maher, McGovern, Moore (3), Moran (3), Munroe (2), Papke (2), Ross (4), Scanlon, Sharkey (3), Sharkey/Corbett, Stanley (2), John L. Sullivan (10), Sullivan/Kilrain, Sullivan/McCaffrey, Tunney/Gibbons and dozens of others. Size, paper choice and age has taken its toll on the delicate premiums. Condition ranges from VR PR to EX but most are in the PR to GD range. Condition issues include (not limited to) stains, tears, pieces missing and tape repairs are found and to be expected. The multi subject premiums are 2-pages and the art work is nothing shy of impressive. Amassing them when they originally appeared was literally a life time effort. It would be a shame to call this presentation anything short of an historical archive, and one incredibly challenging to recreate. See our web site for a list of the contents of this collection.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
