    Description

Circa. 1889 Police Gazette John L. Sullivan Cabinet SGC 50 VG/EX 4. John L. Sullivan was the last great bare-knuckle champion and the first national sports hero of America. No one had ever seen the likes of the "Boston Strong Boy," who toured the nation, taking on all comers, with an offer of $1000 if they could last four rounds. No one could. With his epic 76-round victory over Jake Kilrain in 1889, his legend grew dramatically. So famous was Sullivan that when he was defeated in 1892 by Gentleman Jim Corbett, women and men across the nation wept for his defeat. The offered very scarce "Police Gazette" cabinet card pictures a shirtless Sullivan, arms folded, defiant and confident, as the public adored him. The photo has lost some contrast in the last 120 years and is credited to Richard Fox who published the Gazette. Although close but not a standard M128, this style mount seems much harder to find. Overall there is light soiling and the back is blank. A scarce entry in the John L. Sullivan library of collectibles.
