Description

C. 1890's W&AH Fry Studio Peter Jackson SGC Authentic. Peter Jackson was born in St. Croix, Danish West Indies who learned to box in Australia and is considered one of the greatest pugilists of his time. Jackson was denied titled recognition due to the prevailing social attitudes based in ignorance and hate. Although an obvious contender for the Heavyweight title, white boxers, including John Sullivan, refused to fight him because he was black. Jackson's 61-round dual to a draw with Jim Corbett (who beat Sullivan) is the finest evidence Jackson deserved to fight the best of his day. His 97-3-3 lifetime record does include the titles "Australian Heavyweight Champion in 1886 and "Commonwealth (British Empire) Heavyweight Champion in 1892. The offered cabinet card was produced by W. & A.H. Fry Studio of Brighton is one of the most sought after boxing subjects and a very rare publicly circulated portrait (also among the first in the US) of a black athlete. Encapsulated SGC Authentic due to tape added to the reverse from previous mounting. Jackson full figure portrait offers nice detail and pleasing contrast. A rare collectible with both social and hobby significance.
