C. 1862 C. D. Fredricks & Co. John Heenan CDV SGC Authentic. UPDATED: The description has been updated with new information.You are witnessing history. This is the very first commercially-issued boxing card of any card type. The 2-3/8" x 4" CDV boasts a remarkable fully detailed image of a full-figure, fists at the ready, John C. Heenan. Heenan is a Hall of Fame bare-knuckle brawler whose historic bout with British Champion Tom Sayers remains one of the most famous matches in boxing history. The first bout to gain the interest of fight fans on both sides of the Atlantic, Heenan vs. Sayers made a hero of both as the fight ended in a bloody draw after more than forty rounds, with Sayers' arm and Heenan's hand broken and each almost blinded by swelling around the eyes.
The reverse features the photographer's logo for Charles D. Fredricks & Co., with an address on Broadway in New York. The photo quality is remarkable. We have been informed that this is a first generation CDV and is the first commercially issued boxing card, part of Fredricks' "specialite" series of CDVs of celebrities.
