    Description

1960 Hemmets Journal Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) Rookie #23 SGC 84 NM 7 - Pop One, None Higher! Muhammad Ali was one of if not the greatest Heavyweight Champion ever to step through the ropes of a boxing ring. An unrepentant tornado of energy and bravado, Ali must be described in terms nothing short of groundbreaking, pioneering, unparalleled... We think you get his significance. In his chosen field of endeavor, he is a great American success story serving as inspiration to millions. To some, his words were mere rambling. Others heard sweet poetry. Winning the WBA heavyweight title three times, Ring Magazine honored him "Fighter of The Year" six times and was called by Sports Illustrated, "The Greatest Athlete." His battles were not just punches and jabs. Ali is a name included in discussions on the Civil-Right's movement, Vietnam War protests and religious freedom.

Offered is the first trading card of Ali, when he was "Cassius Clay" from the 1960 Hemmets Journal series. The promotion celebrated athletes of the 1960 Olympics and saw circulation in panels of four. Hand cut and now graded SGC 84 NM 7, the card is one of only four total reviewed by SGC. Few would have guessed the young man who would win the gold medal in the Light Heavyweight division would becoming such a prominent name of the 20th Century. How fitting that this card is a "Pop One-of-One With None Higher" SGC title holder.
