1960 Hemmets Journal Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) Rookie #23 PSA
Mint 9. The young Gold Medalist owned skill and confidence in
equal measures, his full-throated bravado establishing the young
Louisville Lip as one of the most controversial figures in American
sport even before his conversion to Islam and rejection of the
Vietnam War draft fanned those flames into an inferno. We find the
eighteen-year-old Clay at the cusp of international fame, a card
removed from the pages of Hemmets Journal, a Swedish periodical
that produced a special issue featuring trading cards of an array
of athletes to watch at the 1960 Rome Olympics.Of course, Cassius Clay would prove to be the most significant figure to emerge from those Games, establishing this rookie card as, by far, the most desirable of the Hemmets breed. The manner of distribution required a hand cut to form individual cards, and here that endeavor was executed masterfully, assigning both razor-sharp corners and flawlessly balanced borders to the piece. Heritage recently made hobby history when we sold the lone PSA Gem Mint 10 representation of this card for a towering $90,000 in 2018, and we don't expect collectors will get another show at owning that one any time soon. This is one of just seven at the next step down the grading ladder.
