1948 Leaf Rocky Graziano #50 PSA VG-EX 4 - Only Eight Confirmed Examples on Record! With all due respect to the Flying Dutchman, the undisputed champion of rare entries is card #50 from the 1948 Leaf series featuring Rocky Graziano. These most famous rarities have been the result of financial profit, philosophical differences and one very famous typo. Of course, the most renowned being the T206 Honus Wagner card from the T206 series from 1909. Leaf Gum helped open the modern era of collecting in 1948/49 with card sets dedicated to baseball players, football players, pirates and the sweet science of Boxing. Leaf really pushed the limits of fair play and ad copy with their productions. The baseball set offers 98 cards but comes numbered up to 168, same for the set devoted to the pirate life. The '49 football set includes 49 cards but is numbered to 150, the boxing series offers 49 cards but is numbered to #102. Certainly they knew kids would chew Leaf until their jaws hurt desperately hunting down the missing numbers. Based on issued cards, the typical Leaf sheet obviously included 49 cards. Naturally, any card set dedicated to boxing would include the reigning Middleweight Champion of the world. It was probably a disagreement over compensation or maybe the fact that Graziano was indefinitely suspended by NBA President Abe Green for backing out of a scheduled bout that card #50 was "knocked out" of production. Regardless of the reason, what occurred was his replacement from the set at some point very, very early in production. The problem seems to have persisted as he is a glaring omission in the 1951 Topps Ringside series leaving his Exhibit card as one of the few cards left for hobbyists to pursue. The rarity of this card cannot be under stated. To date, SGC and PSA combined have graded over 110 Goudey Lajoie cards, over 200 "Magie" errors, over 125 Plank T206s and even over sixty T206 Wagner cards. There is a total of only eight confirmed Leaf Graziano cards!

Graded PSA VG-EX 4, this card is the only recorded entry in VG-EX, there are three rated higher. This example shows a consistent amount of wear at the corners to account for the PSA grade. The hues are rich and inviting, the surrounding frame is bright and blemish-free save for some very mild soiling. Eye appeal exceeds technical assessment. It is with a bit of irony that the 50th card to see circulation, extremely limited as it was is also card #50. This a close to impossible acquisition and the obvious reason so few hobbyists can complete their treasured sets. No one can argue that this card rightfully belongs on any list of the rarest of the rare with only the ultra rare T206 Doyle "N.Y. Natl." card can compare in rarity and that card has sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
