    Description

1921 Exhibits Jack Johnson SGC 80 EX/NM 6 - Pop One, None Higher! Only a fool would say Jack Johnson was not a victim of the beliefs of his era. Johnson became the World Heavyweight Champion by defeating Tommy Burns in Australia on December 26, 1908, becoming the first African-American to accomplish that feat. Today, collectors' appreciation of this accomplishment has only continued to grow, considerably moreso in the wake of Ken Burns' PBS documentary "Unforgivable Blackness." Johnson is one of the most highly collected boxers. It was his historic fight against James Jeffries on July 4, 1910 that is most noted. His opponent went so far as to say, "I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro." This all came to a crushing end in the 15th round when his coach stopped the fight just before the unthinkable would occur... he was about to be knocked out by Johnson. Offered is his 1921 Exhibit card, graded SGC 80 EX/NM 6. A "Pop One-of-One With None Higher" title holder.
