1920's - 1930's Exhibit Heavyweights Partial Set (52/64). Offered is a 52-card near complete sets of 1920's Exhibit "Heavyweights." These issues began circulation around 1925 or '26. Jack Dempsey was the heavyweight champ from 1919 to 1926, but he fought only a few times. There was a great deal of speculation over whether black fighter Harry Wills would be permitted to challenge for the title. Dempsey and Wills signed to fight in 1924 but the bout was called off for racist reasons. Light heavyweight champ Gene Tunney seemed to be a logical next choice. Tenney and Dempsey locked horns in the fall of 1926 opening up contenders for the crown to a r,atch or possibly Wills. Soon, Jack Sharkey came into prominence as well as Max Schmeling and Primo Carnera. ESCO capitalized on the widespread public interest in the heavyweight division with this ongoing series devoted to the division. Based on certain caption changes and styles, the first cards featured Wills, Dempsey and Tunney. At some point, Wills was dropped and Sharkey added. Heavyweights fronts are styled like the 1926-1928 baseball cards. Backs could be blank or post card format, or have premium ads and coupons. Some typeface variations are known dating some cards as far back as 1926. Ad and Coupon backs on some of the cards indicate issuance as late as 1931. Minute variations exist as images were used for several years for you master set fans. Includes: Gene Tunney (11 cards), Harry Wills (10 cards), Jack Dempsey (9 cards), Jack Sharkey (8 cards), Max Schmeling (8 cards) and Primo Carnera (6 cards). Overall, the collection grades 42% VG to EX, 58% lesser (one coupon clipped).
