Description

1912 Cohen Weenen & Co. Jack Johnson (Green Back) #5 SGC 82 EX-NM+ 6.5 - Pop One, One Higher! Jack Johnson was a champion in an era when African-Americans weren't supposed to be champions. He was the first black Heavyweight Champion in the USA. It was a title he enjoyed for eight years. His epic 1910 battle against Jeffries wasn't just the fight of the year, it was dubbed the "Fight of the Century" and the century still had ninety years to go. Our offered card was produced by Cohen Weenen, a cigarette company based in London. Favorited by many, this iconic portrait of Champion Jack Johnson is one of two cards Johnson is featured on this relatively scarce UK set. For those who like a little choice, this is the "Green Back" variation. Standing 6 feet tall, 200 pounds, with his arms crossed, with a strong glare, fewer images of Johnson are as powerful as the one featured on this card. It was the same one - for some it was the last one - of Johnson they would see before the lights went out. Strong example with just hints of wear. Graded SGC 82 EX-NM+ 6.5.
