    Description

1910 T226 Red Sun Jim Jeffries SGC 60 EX 5. Graded EX 60 5 by SGC, one of only three grade to date and by far (both others are 30 GD 2) the superior example. James Jeffries is known for being a strong and durable fighter. As a natural lefty, his powerful left-hook was his greatest asset and ended many battles. During his career, he broke the ribs of three opponents, and these were all title fights against other titans of the era. A famous meeting with Bob Fitzsimmons earned Jeffries a broken nose, cheeks cut to the bone and open bloody gashes over both eyes, but the brutality didn't stop him. In the eighth round Jeffries landed a right to the mid-section, then his killer left hook and it was, literally, lights out for Fitzsimmons. With a lifetime 18-1-2 record (14 by KO), Jeffries retired undefeated in 1904. Jeffries returned on July 4, 1910 to fight Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson, a fight which became cause to celebrate the racism of the time. His dreams of victory came to a crushing end in the 15th round when his coach stopped the fight just before he was about to be knocked out by Johnson. This series was issued that fateful year. Next to Johnson, Jeffries is a key subject. A very clean example, the card's age is apparent with just light corner wear and some slight edge chipping. A truly rare entry and one worthy of the most advanced boxing collections. Accurately graded Excellent condition.
