Description

1910 T226 Red Sun Jack Johnson SGC SGC 40 VG 3 - One of Two SGC Graded To Date! Graded SGC 40 VG 3. This is one of only three total examples graded to date by the top two grading services. Jack Johnson was a man who battled just as hard outside of the ring as he did inside the ring. Johnson became the World Heavyweight Champion by defeating Tommy Burns in Australia on December 26, 1908, becoming the first African-American to accomplish that feat. Today, collectors' appreciation for the first African-American Heavyweight Champion has only continued to grow, considerably more so in the wake of Ken Burns' PBS documentary "Unforgivable Blackness." Johnson is one of the most highly collected boxers and few collectibles bearing his name or image can match the rarity of his T226 Red Sun tobacco card. This edition is the sister series to the immensely scarce baseball set which utilizes the same unmistakable green borders and brilliant red reverse. To the best of our research, there are but two other confirmed Jack Johnson Red Suns in collector hands, both in fair to poor condition. The card is centered to the left and has consistent corner wear but no creases, wrinkles or surface loss. This rarity offers a bold image of the legendary fighter and is a prized addition to any vintage boxing collection.
