Description
1910 E125 American Caramel Jim Jeffries SGC Authentic. James Jeffries' (1875-1953) legacy is a statement to the sad attitude of his era. Growing up on an Ohio farm, the families move to California led to his career in boxing. Strong and durable, Jeffries style was to fight in a crouch position, just as he is here, with his formidable left-arm extended. As a natural lefty, his powerful left-hook was his greatest asset and ended many battles. During his career, he broke the ribs of three opponents, and these were all title fights against other titans of the era. A broken nose, cheeks cut to the bone and open bloody gashes over both eyes, all gifts of Bob Fitzsimmons in a 1902 title fight, didn't stop him for in the eighth round Jeffries landed a right to the mid-section, then his killer left hook and it was, literally, lights out for Fitzsimmons. With an 18-1-2 record (14 by KO), Jeffries retired undefeated in 1904. Jeffries returned on July 4, 1910 to fight heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, a fight which became cause to celebrate the racism of the time. He was quoted as saying, "I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro." Jeffries' faith in white superiority came to a crushing end in the 15th round when his coach stopped the fight just before the unthinkable would occur... he was about to be knocked out by Johnson.
The offered E125 American Caramel Co. of James Jeffries (SGC Authentic), in his noted stance, was produced to capitalize on this epic battle. The back reads, "This series show Jeffries & Johnson in six of their favorite positions, true to life, one of which is given free with each penny's worth of our Big Fight Caramels." This is the only pose and only example of Jeffries known to exist! An E125 of Jack Johnson is not known to exist. The "A" assessment is explained by the missing bottom left tab. These tabs allowed the figure to freely stand upright. A single crease in his left arm and along the fold line of the right tab are also present. Only through pure speculation can we say whether or not another will ever be found. The extreme rarity of these boxing theme collectibles may be explained by the concept (as it would be directed toward children) was scrapped altogether considering the racial overtones of the event. It is possible only a precious few, if any, actually made their way into circulation. This timeless piece holds the distinction of having both hobby and historical significance!
