1890's Newsboy & Morrison Jim Corbett Cabinet Photos SGC Trio (3). On Sept. 7, 1892 a bloodied and beaten John L. Sullivan stood at the ring apron that early September day at the New Orleans' Olympic Club and graciously addressed the fans. "All I have to say is that I came into the ring once too often," he spoke, "and if I had to get licked I'm glad I was licked by an American." The American to which he referred to was the new Heavyweight title holder - Gentleman Jim Corbett! That bout was one of the most significant events in 19th century athletics, the day that saw the fall of the once-invincible John L. Sullivan is on an historical par with Ripken playing in game 4,191 and Aaron hitting #715. Offered is a trio of cabinet photos circulating not too long after the Sullivan bout. Includes: 1) 1895 Newsboy Cabinets #72 on mount - The Hull Collection. "J.J. Corbett" graded SGC 50 VG/EX 4; 2) 1895 Newsboy Cabinets #24 in photo. "J.J. Corbett" graded SGC 40 VG 3 on "Campbell" mount; 3) Scarce 1890's Morrison Studio, IL, "James J. Corbett, Champion of the World" with Haymarket Theatre address. High quality image with some surface wear, very under graded at SGC 30 Good 2
