    Description

1890 N310 Mayo Cut Plug Jas J. Corbett SGC 50 VG/EX 4. Graded 50 VG/EX 4 by SGC, one of four at this grade level and only one example recorded higher. Name at top" variation. On September 7th, 1892 the unthinkable happened--the great John L. Sullivan was knocked out in the twenty-first round. No one could believe it, even those that were present at ringside who had witnessed the event first hand. Is seemed that the entire nation mourned. "Gentlemen Jim" or James J. Corbett cemented his place in boxing history that day as the first and only man to beat Sullivan, who would remain Heavyweight Champion until 1897. Corbett's career was brief, but his refined style is said to have changed the way boxers approached the sport. Although not a champion, Corbett's contributions make him a rightful entry into the Boxing Hall of Fame. Honest corner wear and slight spot stains account for the grade. Very Good to excellent condition.
