Description

1889 N386 Spaulding & Merrick John L. Sullivan SGC 40 VG 3. Graded 40 VG 3 by SGC, the middle entry of only three recorded to date. From a series of 24 subjects of mostly actors and actresses, number 7 in the series is heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan. Sullivan's legacy is without equal. A titan of the ring, the Irish giant brawler fought only only trained men but would perform exhibitions where a $500 bounty was offered to any man brave enough to oppose him. Easily seen is the formidable image which rests well to the right of center, less readily viewable is single light reverse wrinkle and the light surface lines which at first appear to be scratches but are actually imperfections in the stock. True external damage would have resulted in a much lower technical grade. This incredible rarity displays a strong well defined version of the now classic Sullivan arms folded portrait found in other card productions of the same era. Corner quality is at the EX/MT to NM levels. The format offers no advertising and the reverse has the full Merrick & Spaulding stamp back in red ink. The few and unobtrusive condition issues make this an attractive rarity sharply elevating any boxing collection to elite status.
