1889 N386 Spaulding and Merrick #7 John Sullivan SGC 60 EX 5. Graded 60 EX 5 by SGC, the highest graded Sullivan known to date. This series of 24 prizefighters is so very rare that even the N386 designation is in question. John L. Sullivan is considered by most to be the greatest boxer of his time. The holder of various championship titles, Sullivan was both a gloved heavyweight champion from 1882-1892 and the last bare-knuckle champion under London Prize Ring rules. Winning over 450 fights in his career, Sullivan would do exhibitions where he offered any US citizens as much as $500 for the chance to fight him. I would imagine all were a little richer but a lot more sorry. The offered N386 collectible, #7 in the series offers no obverse advertising and displays a Spaulding & Merrick blue company stamp on the reverse. Light corner wear with one surface chip on the left edge greatly account for the technical grade. The front surface is clean with the reverse showing light signs of ink transfer and faint stains. An attractive relic of immeasurable rarity, one not to be offered again soon.
